Casualties of War Toy Soldiers by The Dorothy Collective

One of the hottest art collectives on the scene are the Brit combo Dorothy™ based in Manchester, England.  Self-labelled as “a collective of like-minded people working on unlike-minded ideas,” they have received some major attention through the years having won Design Week, D&AD, and The New York Festival.  Their piece entitled Casualties Of War is another punchy project from the team deftly injection moulding 3" tall toy soldiers reveals the less glamorous side of battle, something few Western governments or media tend to reveal.

Casualties Of War a strips back the Hollywood mythology and reveals the true horror during and post combat. A powerful reminder of how our society likes to adopt the heroic mythology of military life from childhood onwards. America is well known for recruiting in the poorest states where young people have little choice or chance of employment. They've even been known to set up free arcades packed with the latest war games in order to lure teens into s future military career.

I have always been a strident objector to war in all its manifest forms, asides WW2 I have never been convinced of any of the following conflicts, be it morally, strategically or economically. Most of which are the result of previous wars and in the main part cack-handed Western intervention. And even then, in most cases in order to protect other vested interests such as oil or the protection of territories set up by NATO and the UN. I won't dip into specific territorial crises here, but as a matter of interest, how do how do you stop a series of countries without diplomatic ties to the West encroaching on the illegitimately designated borders of another?

No matter where your politics lie, I am sure this prime example of the casualties of war here's a quote from a BBC article covering the aftermath of the Falklands conflict in 2002 will sway your beliefs – "The South Atlantic Medal Association say they are "almost certain" the suicide toll is greater than 255 – the number of men killed in the war. The association estimates the total could be 264…More veterans of the Falklands War have killed themselves in the years since the 1982 conflict ended than died during hostilities, according to a veterans support group…"
