Diem Chau

Posted: 04 May 2011 03:50 AM PDT

Famous for her carved crayons, artist Diem Chau was born in Vietnam, and moved to America as a refugee in 1986. Chau graduated with a BFA from Seattle's Cornish College of the Arts and received an Artist Trust GAP Grant and a PONCHO Artist-in-Residence Award. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Miami, Seattle and Los Angeles. Chau combines common mediums and common means to create "delicate vignettes of fleeting memory, gesture and form", minimalism meets nostalgia forming surprisingly sensitive small scale pieces that draw on ancient myth and folklore with the aim of cross cultural connectivity on a deeply humanistic level.  Chau's more recent work leans towards a new exploration of the mind's periphery, recapturing an inner subconscious narrative of forgotten and faded moments too brief to retain.
