Naoshima – Japan’s Art Island

Posted: 10 Jul 2011 08:03 PM PDT

Naoshima is a remote island town which houses Japan's finest museums and architecture, yet those who have shaped the face of the island have made it less touristy and more like the Japan of yesteryear, albeit with a modernist twist. The biggest attractions of the island is the Chichu Museum, which incorporates select installation pieces into the very structure of the building itself, and Benesse House, the hotel without TV or internet access but compensates for the loss with loads of visual interest and it has a modern art style. The site features permanent installations by Walter De Maria and James Turrell, as well as painted works in the Water Lilies series by Claude Monet.
